What’s Changing — and Why It Matters

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, Companies House is introducing mandatory identity verification for individuals in key roles within UK companies. These changes aim to improve transparency, reduce fraud, and increase trust in the UK business register.

Whether you’re a company director or a person with significant control (PSC), you’ll soon be required to verify your identity and provide a Companies House personal code when submitting filings.

Who Needs to Verify?

You’ll need to verify your identity if you are:

  • A Company Director

  • A Person with Significant Control (PSC)

  • A Company Secretary

  • Anyone filing on behalf of a company

How Can You Verify?

There are three ways to verify your identity:

  • Through an ACSP (Authorised Corporate Service Provider)

    • Bradgate Business Support Limited is an ACSP — a trusted, regulated firm that can verify your identity on your behalf, submit your information securely, and help you meet all Companies House requirements.

  • Directly via Companies House

    • Use GOV.UK One Login. You’ll need a valid form of photo ID:

      • Biometric passport

      • UK photocard driving licence

      • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), Biometric Residence Card (BRC), or Frontier Worker permit

  • In Person at the Post Office

    • If you don’t have suitable digital ID, you can verify at a participating Post Office branch using:

      • Bank or building society account details

      • National Insurance number

What Happens After Verification?

Once your identity is verified, you’ll receive a Companies House personal code. This is a unique identifier you’ll need to include whenever you/us:

  • File a confirmation statement

  • Appoint a director or PSC

  • Update your company details

When You Need to Verify Your Identity

From 18 November 2025, identity verification becomes mandatory — but your specific responsibilities and deadlines depend on your role:

If you’re both a Director and a PSC of the same company:

You must provide your personal code separately for each role.

  • As a Director: Include your code in the company’s confirmation statement.

  • As a PSC: Submit your code via a separate service within 14 days of the company’s confirmation statement date.
(This PSC-specific service goes live on 18 November 2025.)

If you’re a PSC but not a Director of the same company:

You must submit your personal code within the first 14 days of your birth month, each year.

For example, if your date of birth is 22 January, your 14-day period begins on 1 January.

If you’re newly appointed as a Director or PSC after 18 November 2025:

  • New directors must verify before their appointment is registered with Companies House.

  • New PSCs must verify and submit their personal code within 14 days of becoming a PSC.
